Enhancement of the Lakota virtual Keyboard

Enhancement of the Lakota virtual Keyboard

Postby Kostya » January 21st, 2009, 3:49 pm

Friends, here's an update on the virtual Lakota Keyboard used in this Forum.

After testing the virtual Lakota Keyboard that can be launched by pressing [Turn Lakota Keyboard ON] button, we found some discomfort with frequent turning the keyboard on and off when writing the posts that have Lakota and English parts intermingled. To make typing such texts easier we introduced the following modifications to the Keyboard:

1. you can use it as before - mouse click on [Turn Lakota Keyboard ON] and type Lakota stuff, mouse click again - and type English stuff, etc. BUT please NEVER, NEVER press [ key!!!

2. if you press [ instead of left square bracket you'll get [ b ] tag that makes the text bold in the output. But beside that "[ b ]" this hotkey has another important job: it turns your Keyboard into "switchable Lakota" state. That means that you write Lakota stuff, but if you want to type some English, instead of taking your mouse and clicking on [Turn Lakota Keyboard OFF] button you just press ] key, that gives you closing [/ b ] tag and now you can type English with Lakota Keyboard in stand by mode. So you can now type something like this:

Wičháša k'uŋ héhaŋ - note the difference between k'uŋ and kiŋ

--writing actually something like this (recording the keys on English keyboard that you actually pressed):
Code: Select all
[Wicha'ra k'un he'han ] - note the difference between [k'uf] and [kif]

--So, this enhancement aims at two goals:
1. make typing intermingled Lakota-English text easier
2. disciplines the members in putting Lakota sentences into bold tags.

We need your feedback for this update - maybe we should modify it somehow.

Doesn't seem to be working for me . . .

This might be because your browser still retains the old VK code. Try Shift+Ctrl+Delete and then delete that cache and the cookies.

Testing :

[Wicha'ra k'uf heha'f]

Don't think it works for me.

Clive.

P.S. Still don't understand what a "CACHE" is, exactly. Or why one should need to clear it :?: .
COOKIES? Eh, what cookies are those? Do I have them? If so, where exactly, & what do they do?

You see, Kostik & Nina, my computer knowledge, like my typing proficiency) is quite non-existent (not to mention monumentally ignorant)! :cry: ;)

Good!

BTW, I'm thinking about the second Lakota keyboard that can be selected from the Virtual Keyboard list, draft name - Lakota Stenography.
I mean to add some shortcuts, "hotkeys" for most frequent Lakota words and morphemes. Like these
k = kiŋ
l = lé
h = hé
ln = lená
hn = hená
kl = kiŋ lé
kh = kʼuŋ hé
w = waŋ
lk = Lotkúŋkešni
wc = wičha
nsw = But of course native fluent speakers are welcome to comment and correct me.
etc.

Onestar has reported a problem typing SLO in the New Topic title box. I've checked this out, and these are my findings:

Using Keyboard and Fonts bundle - OK, no problem.

VK on without using enhancements - typing appears in body of message even though cursor is in title box.

VK with [ pressed – [b] appears in body text, can type in title box but not in SLO.

I don't know if this is a new phenomenon, I usually use LLC keyboard.

The Topic input field is not linked to VK, I'll try to link it soon, but you can type the topic name first in the message field and then copy-paste it to the topic field..

Ok. That seems to work ok. Other than having to hunt and peck for the Lakota letteres on the keyboard. :lol:

I noticed that I can type the letters, then the ' and keep typing and the keyboard moves the diacritical mark on top of the letter! KEWL! 8-)
