GETTING STARTED - WHERE TO BEGIN

The most frequent question asked by our new members is “Where and how do I begin?” so here is a Roadmap to show you the way! Click on the colored links to go directly to the relevant topic.

1. Look through the Forum policy and rules - you will see that we don't discuss religious, spiritual, and political topics, the only focus is the language here. Also, culture is discussed in the language topics as the language is the soul of the culture.

2. Lakota fonts, keyboard - there you can learn how to type Lakȟóta oíye using the Virtual Keyboard (VK) and switch from and to English by pressing CapsLock key.

3. Learn the SLO alphabet, Standard Lakota Orthography here. You can learn more about SLO here: The history of SLO, Lakota dialects and SLO

4. Interactive textbook - start with Pronunciation and spelling (SLO), then look at the Vocabulary topic and try the quizzes there.

5. Explore the New Lakota Dictionary Online - click the NLD-O icon at the top right-hand corner of any page. There you can type an English or Lakota word, and click on any word in the appearing dictionary entry to get its own dictionary entry. You can also use the instant (or inline) dictionary, NLDI. You can double-click on or mouse-select any word in the text (including those you are reading now), both Lakota or English, and the translation from the NLD-O is given. To use NLDI while you are writing a post, check the NLDI box next to "Turn Lakota keyboard ON".

6. You can bookmark two pages that are still in beta-testing (bugs may occur): Grammar charts and Spellchecker

7. We'd like to welcome you to the Forum, so it would be nice if you tell us something about yourself here: PLEASE introduce yourself

8. The upper levels of the Forum are only available to Active Members - Škíŋčiyapi. Work towards achieving that status by taking part in Sentence of the Week. Don’t be afraid to ask questions or to make mistakes. There are many friendly Forum members who will help you, so don’t be shy!

Tókša akhé,

Akičhita kiŋ

Hi admin,

When you have a moment, can you double check the links in your otherwise very useful post? Some are returning 404 errors.

The broken links I found are in items (3), (6) and (8).

Here is a link to the SLO alphabet for item (3).

As for the link to the entry test in item (8), it seems it's not that the link is broken but that the entry test is down.

Hi Erin,

The test no longer exists, you already have access to all parts of the forum that passing the entry test used to give you.
The rest will be available when you take actively part in the forum activities and become an "active member" (which by the way is decided by the forum moderators and admin monitoring your contributions, not automatically by a certain number of posts).

Tókša!
Jana
