Here are instructions on how to participate:

1) request a scan of a page (either by making a post in this forum or by e-mailing .....
2) use any text editor that supports Unicode (e.g. Microsoft Word) and create a document
3) use the following database fields

\v
\c
\p
\h
\t
\f
\n

\p
\h
\t
\f
\n

Note that a back slash is used for marking the database fields. You can simply copy and paste the field structure into your document.
Here is a description of this individual fields:

\v (this field will contain the Volume number, the field will occur only once per volume)
\c (this field will contain chapter/article title, the field will occur only once per article)
\p (this field will contain the scan number, not the page number as it appears on the printed page)
\h (this field will contain one sentence of the Dakota/Lakota text as it appears in the scan)
\t (this field will remain empty, later it will be used for phonemic re-transcription of the original text)
\f (this field will remain empty, later it will be used for free translation of the original text)
\n (this field can be used by the volunteer/archivist to write comments, e.g. when something is hard to read etc.; after the first sentence of an article you should write: "Article typed by "your name" or "initials")

Here is a sample of edited text:

\v Vol. 1, May 1871
\c Iteowapi kin.
\p 1
\h Iteowapi kin.
\t
\f
\n Article typed by Jan U., proofed by Gerda

\p 1
\h Wicinyana de wanyanka.
\t
\f
\n

\p 1
\h Waȟca waštešte ota pahi qa hetanhan wanji nicipazo.
\t
\f
\n

4) When you finish typing a chapter or an article you can copy and paste the text into a post in this forum.
5) Each finished text has to be proofread by another volunteer to ensure that the first volunteer didn't omit something (the most common error is skipping a word or two, or skipping a line, less frequently archivists misspell a word). If you proof a text copied by another volunteer, make comments on errors and your corrections in the \n field. After the text has been thus proofread it will be added to the text corpus database and it will also be available for the forum members to study from.

Additional notes:
It is absolutely essential that you type the text as it appears in the original print making NO changes to it. It is also important that you keep the field structure intact and that you provide the scan number and volume number.
By participating on this archival project you help us document the language which is an important step in the effort to revitalize it.
The scan allows you to enlarge the text to a great extent so that you can see the text more clearly whenever it is blurred. Learn how to place the window with the scan next to or above the window of your text editor, or learn how to quicly switch the two windows using ALT+TAB.
Make sure that you do not skip a line - that is probably the most common error archivists make.
